Responsibilities

As a program volunteer we ask that you:

  • Take your time commitment seriously. Attend all programs for which you are scheduled to volunteer and try to arrive 5-10 minutes early.
  • Contact staff ASAP if you are unable to attend a scheduled program.
  • Provide your own transportation to and from programs. Be sure to have your ride situation arranged before each activity. Remain with YC staff until your ride comes and let them know you are leaving.
  • Stay with your partner from beginning to end of each program. Help them off the van when they arrive, throughout the program, and when loading onto the van. Their safety and enjoyment is your #1 concern.
  • Assist in adapting and get involved in the program! Help your partner run the bases, hold a paintbrush, give them advice, guide their wheelchair, etc.
  • Make every effort to get to know your partner! Limit conversations with other volunteers and put your cell phones and iPods away until program is over.
  • Bring everything you need for the day’s activity. Don’t forget your lunch for afternoon programs or your swimsuit and towel on pool days!
  • Be a role model. Exhibit “Youth Challenge Appropriate” behavior at all programs. Please no bad language, name-calling, hand holding or other public displays of affection during YC programs.
  • Assist with clean-up as needed, especially at off-site activities. Help us leave a program location better than we found it.
  • Follow instructions of the program instructor and staff.
  • Participants should always be accompanied by one volunteer and a staff person in the restroom.
  • Report all accidents, injuries, or other potential dangers to staff. Provide feedback to the staff by discussing areas of confusion or concern and completing seasonal evaluations.
  • Above all, HAVE FUN! YC is a place to have a good time, make new friends, and learn new things.
