This year only, we traded in our Santa hats for party hats for one last celebration of YC’s 40th anniversary. The UN- Holiday Show was held on December 10 at Magnificat High School’s Performing Arts Center. We celebrated YC-STYLE by taking you on a tour of what Youth Challenge was like in the ‘70s, ‘80s, ‘90s and ‘00s as interpreted by the cast and crew of our Dance & Drama program. The event also recognized the 2016 adult Volunteer of the Year, Christy Svagerko.
Thirty-six talented participants and volunteers were tasked with recreating what they thought Youth Challenge was like “back in the day”. Through the Dance & Drama program, they spent 8 weeks writing, choreographing, and perfecting their performances. YC Founder and Executive Director, Mary Sue Tanis, even made a cameo in the ‘70s skit.
After the play, Christy Svagerko presented with 2016’s Volunteer of the Year award. Once an employee of YC, Christy now works in Meeting and Events Services for Ernst & Young. She served on the YC Board of Trustees for six years and has been on the Board of Advisors since 2015. As co-chair of the Annual Benefit auction, Christy has been critical to the auction’s success for many years. Through her dedication to YC, Christy has helped raised over $250,000 since 2010!
“From the moment a Youth Challenge group walked through my previous employer’s doors, I knew that I wanted to be part of their journey,” said Svagerko. “I have been blessed to be part of the YC family since then and it has made such a positive impact on my life. I have changed for the better and I look forward to creating more memories in the future.”
